Be Great, Get Paid.
Instead of giving my opinion on José Bautista’s new contract (if you wait to see how things play out you’re always right!) I thought I’d take a look back. Not on the monster season Bautista had that got him that “great-grandchildren in prep school” money but rather on the weekend José was traded to your Toronto Blue Jays.
WHAT WERE THE BLOGS SAYING?
The Drunks were excited because they wanted another “mediocre utility infielder” and Bautista was “the most mediocre utility infielder ever to play the game of baseball.” Navin at Sports and the City saw the Bautista trade as an example of how bad the Jays were offensively in 2008. The Blue Jay Hunter decided to look at the silver lining, as only Ian can, and focused on Bautista’s soul patch. [timeout, everyone take a minute and check out how much Ian’s photoshopping skills have improved since 2008. That kid, I tell ya. No one grinds harder]
The Ack was on weekend duty over at ToS and commented on José’s first at bat with the Blue Jays (spoiler: he strikes out). Drew at GROF thought the deal was so inconsiquestioal he was completely silent on it (though in fairness there might have been a Shrimp that weekend).
And finally, the great Tao was the only one (of this small sample size) who was able to look into the crystal ball and actually come close to seeing the actual future for the Blue Jays and José Bautista. I quote: “The Jays have acquired José Bautista and he will lead them to the promised land.” Future genrations won’t understand our use of sarcasm so it counts.
WHAT DID THE PAPERS HAVE TO SAY?
Are you kidding? Have you ever tried looking for old aricles on their websites? I’m better off showing up at a taping of Hoarders and flipping through the stacks.

I didn’t go hunting for these links to point out people being wrong (hell, I’m in a few of these posts’ comments sections talking like a wiener). I did it because it’s funny. It’s funny to remember Bautista as an afterthought. He went from, “ummm he’s got a soul patch at least” to the face of the franchise! The highest paid player on the team! He has the fourth largest contract even given out by the Blue Jays! In the last 4 days Getting Blanked put up 6 postings and hosted a fucking live chat discussing Bautista’s contract situation! Ridiculous.
Whether you like the signing or not when you consider where Bautista was a year and a half ago it’s pretty surreal. Good for him, I guess. Hopefully it’ll be good for the Jays too.
